Barclays, a UK-based bank, acquired a stake in US company Ubyx to improve clearing on stablecoins and tokenized deposits, marking the beginning of a new era of regulated digital cash systems from January 7, 2026.
Barclays’ Strategic Move into Digital Money
Barclays made a strategic investment in Ubyx on January 7, 2026. Ubyx is a U.S. company that works on digital money infrastructure.
Barclays is making this move for the first time in stablecoin clearing and settlement infrastructure.
Barclays wants to increase the efficiency of blockchain payments without the issuance of digital currency.
This step represents an increasing interest among banks to use blockchain rails due to an evolving set of regulations in the UK, Europe, or US.
A set of regulations for stablecoins and tokenized deposits is being developed by regulators, which are perceived to involve fewer risks associated with bank funds.
Ubyx’s Role in Stablecoin Ecosystem
Ubyx, established with the aim of solving the problem of market fragmentation in stablecoins, has built a global network for the cleaning and settlement of stable coins and tokenized deposits.
Ubyx supports the cashing-out process at par value into a bank account or a fintech account.
As a neutral intermediary, Ubyx connects issuers, banks, and payment services with compliance solutions for anti-money laundering and know your customer regulations.
This enables the adoption of stablecoins in payment transactions and treasury services.
Ubyx secured $10 million in seed funding on June 17th, 2025, from sources such as Galaxy Ventures, Founders Fund, Paxos, and Payoneer.
This investment shows that there is trust in regulated stablecoin solutions rather than speculating on tokens.
Barclays’ Focus on Infrastructure
Barclays has indicated it has no retail stablecoin issuance plans for the time being.
The focus is on settlement, clearing, and interoperability within digital money, with blockchain providing advantages with low risk.
The model aligns with Barclays’ research on tokenized deposits.
The latter entail direct claims on bank money relative to issuer-backed stable coins. Typically, stakeholders consider the former to be more secure.
By making such an investment, Barclays obtains participation in the future digital streams.
Industry Trends in Blockchain Finance
Similar moves have been made in the past by banks such as JPMorgan, UBS, and Societe Generale in terms of tokenized deposit offerings or blockchain-based settlement systems.
In preference, banks wish to invest in infrastructure rather than currencies.
Stablecoins offer the benefit of fast cross-border payments and immediate settlement and services through programming.
Despite the benefits, stablecoins have not been fully adopted because of the imbalanced redemption and regulatory challenges, which Ubyx solves.
Outlook for Digital Payments
With improved regulations, companies such as Ubyx can combine traditional finance with blockchain technology.
Barclays’ announcement demonstrates that banks recognize the importance of stablecoin/tokenized deposit infrastructure in long-term planning for the convergence of digital currencies with traditional systems.
