Blue Origin has announced it will accept cryptocurrency payments for its commercial suborbital flights on the New Shepard vehicle.
The aerospace company, founded by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, partnered with payments processor Shift4 to make this possible. Customers can now use Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and stablecoins like USDT and USDC to book their tickets to the edge of space.
This integration went live immediately for upcoming flights, allowing seamless transactions directly from popular wallets such as MetaMask or Coinbase. Traditional payment options remain available, but the crypto addition aims to attract a wider audience of digital asset holders. Blue Origin’s move highlights the growing role of cryptocurrencies in high-value transactions, including luxury experiences like space travel.
Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket has already carried over 75 passengers beyond the Kármán Line—the internationally recognized boundary of space at about 100 kilometers altitude.
The suborbital flights offer breathtaking views of Earth through the largest windows in space vehicles. Passengers experience a few minutes of weightlessness before returning safely. For more details on flying with New Shepard, visit Blue Origin’s flight booking page.
Shift4, a leader in integrated payments and commerce technology, powers this new feature. The company processes billions of transactions yearly for businesses worldwide. “Our mission has always been to revolutionize commerce by simplifying the transaction process, and we’re thrilled to now extend that vision beyond Earth,” said Taylor Lauber, CEO of Shift4, in the joint press release.
Alex Wilson, Head of Crypto at Shift4, added, “Crypto is now a $4 trillion asset class, and the sky is the limit when it comes to its potential in the current payments ecosystem.” He noted that cryptocurrencies enable instant international transfers and faster settlements in U.S. dollars, available 24/7. This benefits global customers interested in space tourism.
The partnership taps into the booming cryptocurrency market, where Bitcoin and other assets have seen massive adoption. Space tourism, once limited to the ultra-wealthy, is becoming more accessible. Competitors like Virgin Galactic and SpaceX have also explored innovative payment methods, but Blue Origin’s crypto integration sets a new standard.
Jeff Bezos, who stepped down as Amazon CEO to focus on Blue Origin, has long championed reusable rocket technology to lower space travel costs. This crypto move aligns with his vision of making space accessible to more people. While ticket prices remain high—around $1 million per seat—the payment flexibility could draw in tech-savvy investors and crypto enthusiasts.
