A global cyber outage that occurred on July 19, 2024, had an impact on a number of industries, including airlines, media, financial services, and telecommunications, but it appeared to have little effect on cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin was not directly impacted by the global cyber outage.
The major cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase reported that all of its operations, including Bitcoin-related ones, are still fully functional.
Microsoft and CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company, are primarily to blame for the global cyber outage. The outage affected only systems with computers running the Windows OS and was triggered by an update which prevented them from booting up. This resulted in communication difficulties, which led to several airlines including American, Delta and United grounding flights Worldwide. Financial and telecom operations worldwide were similarly disrupted.
Concerns about the global telecommunications infrastructure’s reliability and resilience to such incidents have been raised by the outage’s widespread nature. However, the wider market conditions or reactions to the outage in other sectors have somehow not transferred significantly to major digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as they have not experienced significant network disruptions or price volatility. Despite typical market fluctuations, prices have generally remained stable.
However, as more information becomes available, and the situation develops, it may become clearer how the cyber outage will affect infrastructure resilience and regulatory responses in the cryptocurrency sector. In the meantime, a workaround was posted on the X platform.
Similar to previous incidents in which routine updates accidentally caused significant disruptions, it appears that a misconfiguration during routine network maintenance caused widespread service failures. There is no report or indication it was a cyberattack, even though the precise technical details are still being evaluated.
