The United States is expected to extend an invitation to India to join the Pax Silica deal.
The pact is strategic as the aim is geared at locking in global supply chains for important minerals and advanced technologies.
This is a positive indication of the relationship between the two countries as they move to cut dependence on centralized sources.
The invitation, due next month, puts India on the list of important partners for the U.S.-driven initiative, as world governments look for a strong foundation of chip technology as well as artificial intelligence infrastructure.
From Launch to Expansion
The launch of Pax Silica took place in December 2025 by the U.S. at a summit held in Washington.
The founding nations who are taking part in the project include the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Israel, and Australia.
The project aims to promote cooperation in critical minerals, energy, advanced manufacturing, and AI infrastructure.
India was not one of the founding members. There was a need for established roles in the value chain, according to the United States officials. This has recently altered due to diplomatic talks.
This announcement was made through social media by the U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg.
“Pleased to share that India will be invited to join Pax Silica,” he tweeted.
It should be noted that this tweet discussed the role of India in building “secure and innovative supply chains.”
Boosting Mineral and Tech Security
“Pax Silica will focus on materials such as Lithium and Rare Earths that are critical in the production of Electric Vehicles, RenewableEnergy, and Defense applications.”
The group agrees on collective action plans regarding procurement, processing, and refining of those materials.
The agreement for semiconductors begins from raw material to manufacturing.
India, encouraging local manufacturing with incentives, could be a beneficiary with technology transfer investments.
According to analysts, the framework is important for diversification efforts away from China, which is a major processor of rare earth.
Recently, Reuters reported China’s dominance of key minerals at between 47% and 87%.
The move fits into India’s critical minerals plan. India has joined the U.S.-led Minerals Security Partnership in 2023.
The latest development in U.S.-Indian talks, involving a call with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, has been the resistance of supply chains.
Impact on India’s Economy
This is supportive of the Make in India initiative. This could bring foreign investments to the country as well as ensure that companies are connected to international networks.
There has been an expansion of manufacturing capacity in India.
This includes facilities that are being developed to manufacture semiconductors.
Experts forecast fewer risks for Indian industries. “This enhances the status of India in international technological streams,” said an official in New Delhi.
The deal also gives India the opportunity to set the agenda for the normative area of sustainability and governance.
Geopolitical Context
The Pax Silica list responds to a sense of urgency about the need to resist dependencies.
The most recent partners to join this pact have been Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, as of January 2026.
The addition of India has expanded the coalition. It supports strategic relationships, such as those in the ‘Quad’ with the U.S., Japan, and Australia.
Critics state the new policy may escalate relations between the US and China. China has imposed export controls regarding minerals.
However, American officials clarify that it has no intention of being an isolationist policy: “Pax Silica is a positive-sum partnership,” declared the fact sheet released by the State Department on the new initiative.
Next Steps Ahead
India is waiting to receive the official invitation in February 2026. This will be followed by talks regarding the execution of the process
A possible signing would happen at an upcoming summit. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor emphasized the news in recent comments.
The group plans projects on AI vulnerabilities and mining investments. The members soon will make an announcement regarding investments together.
As more information comes to light, the role of India could speed up the country’s technology plans.
This agreement does not include any funding, yet the involvement of US companies in AI from the perspective of India reached the millions in Dec 2025.
