The OpenAI corporation has designed an age prediction model for ChatGPT, announced to be operational on January 20, 2026.
This is to detect users under the age of 18 and implement safeguards on the material posted.
This helps to curb the issue of minors gaining access to age-sensitive material on the site.
The system relies on behavioral cues for estimating ages and automatically provides protections for supposed minors.
The system is part of OpenAI’s attempts to conform with worldwide regulations for child safety.
How ChatGPT Age Prediction Functions
ChatGPT does age predictions based on account details such as the date the account was created, when it is active, and use habits.
It then flags those likely to be under 18 years old for the application of restrictions: graphic violence, self-harm depiction, sexual content, and extreme beauty standards.
Users incorrectly classified as minors can verify their age and follow the on-screen instructions using the third-party service called Persona with a selfie or government-issued ID.
Verification data is deleted after processing by OpenAI.
It rolled out worldwide, while the actual deployment in the European Union would happen over the coming weeks as that would meet the regional regulations.
OpenAI wants to further fine-tune its model with data from the rollout.
Effects on Platform Users
Meanwhile, adult users will face little change apart from a possible one-time verification in case of misflagged cases.
It will provide a safer experience for minors by limiting harmful content.
OpenAI emphasized the imperfections of the tool, which defaults to under-18 settings if it is unsure about the age of a user.
The company collaborates with experts to improve the accuracy.
Regulatory Context Drives Changes
More governments are pressing for more strength in AI safeguards on behalf of children.
This includes the Digital Services Act of the European Union, which urges the need for platforms to reduce risks presented to minors.
United States lawmakers raise many questions about what generative AI is doing to today’s youth.
OpenAI is facing lawsuits that said ChatGPT contributed to the suicides of teens with its harmful advice, and while the company is denying any wrongdoing, additional safety features have since been added.
Looking Forward in AI Safety
OpenAI considers age prediction a part of its safety research. Upgrades to this aspect might include addition of parent controls or new restrictions.
This is an indicator that the industry is experiencing changes that embrace responsible use of AI.
With ChatGPT and other AI technology being incorporated into everyday processes, innovation and protection of users should be balanced.
Further milestones will include a full implementation within the EU and model developments according to first findings being made.
OpenAI welcomes feedback for improvements.
