The Ripple Labs SEC case that began in December 2020 has officially concluded. Both parties filed a joint stipulation on August 7, 2025, agreeing to dismiss their respective appeals in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, ending one of the most highly watched legal battles in the cryptocurrency industry.
A Milestone Legal Outcome
Ripple, accused by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of conducting an unregistered securities offering through the sale of XRP, faced the threat of penalties exceeding $2 billion. However, following key rulings in 2023, which found XRP’s sale on public exchanges did not violate securities laws, Ripple was only ordered to pay a $125 million civil penalty in 2024.
The court’s ruling has provided clarity for XRP holders and the wider crypto market, affirming that XRP is not a security on public exchanges. This resolution resolves years of uncertainty surrounding the token and could set a precedent for other cryptocurrencies facing regulatory scrutiny.
Ripple’s Next Steps: A Focus on Business Growth
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse welcomed the decision, stating that it would allow the company to concentrate on its growth strategy. Ripple has long focused on cross-border payments, and the legal victory clears the way for exploring new avenues, including the launch of its stablecoin, RLUSD.
Garlinghouse’s comments align with the company’s broader growth ambitions, suggesting that Ripple can now focus more on expanding institutional partnerships without the cloud of ongoing litigation.
XRP Price Surge and Investor Sentiment
Following the dismissal, XRP’s price surged by 13%, reaching $3.36 from $2.97, approaching its all-time high of $3.65. This surge was driven by renewed investor confidence, whale activity, and the growing hope for XRP exchange-traded funds (ETFs), with firms like Bitwise and Grayscale filing applications.
Ripple’s Future Plans
Ripple can now focus on expanding its business, including cross-border payments and the potential launch of its stablecoin, RLUSD. The outcome could pave the way for more favorable regulatory conditions for other cryptocurrencies facing SEC scrutiny.
