Silver prices surged above $80 per ounce towards the end of December 2025, indicating the start of a substantial precious metals market rally.
Record-Breaking Silver Prices in the Later Part of 2025
Silver prices advanced above $80 per ounce on December 29, 2025, breaking the record with a final price of $82.67 per ounce.
This touched a record high for silver, closing at $78.98 per ounce on the same trading day. Other records showed a final price of $81.66 per ounce on December 28, 2025, reinforcing the breach of the $80 level.
The final push of the silver price above $82 per ounce represented a gain of over 150% since the beginning of 2025, set at approximately $29 per ounce.
What Is Driving the Silver Price Surge
Silver’s industrial applications and use as a safe-haven asset have contributed largely to the rally.
Industrial demand for silver is driven by renewable energy, the EV sector, and the electronics industry, as the metal is used for conductivity purposes.
The Silver Institute expects the global automotive use of silver demand to register a compound annual growth rate of 3.4% until 2031, as more silver is used in EVs than in conventional vehicles.
This is in line with the industrial use of more than 30% of the total demand for over 1 billion ounces in 2025, according to the Silver Institute’s demand-supply numbers.
Demand and limited supplies and inventories have squeezed the market.
According to the Silver Institute, the industry has marked the fifth consecutive year of deficits, with mined supplies remaining unchanged at 813 million ounces through 2025.
Such shortages are consistent with research that identifies a huge supply-demand gap.
Also, the expectations for rate cuts in the Fed have strengthened prices.
Then, the FOMC statement made on December 10, 2025, indicated a 0.25% cut in the target range to 3.50%-3.75%, marking the third cut in 2025.
Then, market utilities, such as the CME FedWatch, forecast a continuation of the cut pattern in 2026, fostering moves to non-yielding instruments like silver.
Silver’s Performance Relative to Other Assets
As far as the market asset comparison goes, the estimate of the value of silver has been varied.
It has been given $4.04 trillion according to above-ground supply multiplied by the market value.
It has been pointed out that this value measure is not the same as market caps on stock markets. As of December 2025, the market capitalization of Nvidia was $4.638 trillion.
Larger Trends in Precious Metals for the Year 2025
The rally carried over into gold as it reached a record high price in excess of $4,500 per ounce.
Prices reached $4,549.71 per ounce. The gold spot prices posted by the World Gold Council verify that there are increases in excess of 70% in a year’s performance.
Market analysts are now pitting performance in 2025 against that in the late 1970s as these precious metals are now 154% higher in price in the case of silver and 72% higher in price
What All of This Means for Markets
The silver price above $80 with a silver record shows changes in commodity markets, with industrial demand and cuts in rates by the Fed supporting prices.
Volatility in prices continues, and reports of a precise peak of $84 per ounce being reached have not been verified because of a lack of settlement information from authoritative sources such as the London Bullion Market Association.
